About Gina Parr

In 2007 I returned to work full time as an artist after a 25 year career as a production set designer, designing numerous prestigious shows for stage and television, including the original Albert Square and interiors for Eastenders, The Brit Awards, The Royal Variety Performance, The Mercury Music Prize and Shooting Stars.

I originally graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Fine Art in 1979, practiced as a performance artist in the early 1980’s, with funding from Arts Council England, and went on to study Set Design at Chelsea College of Art, leading to work for the BBC as a senior production set designer, and later as a freelancer for all major channels. During this time I also lectured in art and design in various colleges including Chelsea College of Art and Nottingham University.

My work is held in the permanent collection of Keble College Oxford, by the Director of Jestico + Whiles Architects London, the President of the Boston Children's Museum USA, a Senior Economist at Goldman Sachs International London and many other private collections worldwide. I have exhibited widely in galleries and fairs throughout the UK and London, and am at present represented by Candida Stevens Gallery Chichester, The Stratford Gallery Stratford – upon – Avon and Brook Contemporary Budleigh Salterton.

I now live and work in Devon and the East End of London.

My practice reflects the fundamental need to express the bitter - sweet nature of the human condition through abstracted scape and form. I find inspiration not only from my core connection to my Devon UK birthplace and other experienced scape and form, but also from the extreme absence of space as an only child living with a mother who was a hoarder, countered by fishing with my father in the beautiful open Devon seascape and the subsequent memories, relationships, darkness and light and loss and vulnerability. I yearn for an order over chaos, an ordering and reordering of the sensate and liminal space I can now create. During the painting process I build a reverberating relationship with the canvas, a push and pull of chance and control, as experienced in life. As much is taken away from the painting as is added, with constant building and washing of the canvas, aiming to invoke an atmosphere drawn from both the process and the initial emotional trigger. My work is metaphorical, ambiguous, chimerical, organic and elemental.

My photography, my way of painting whilst traveling, extracts illusionary space and form from sometimes cramped and chaotic environments in Europe, urban India, the Far East, and Cuba. I photograph marks, decay and textures, some of which have been laid down by others with previous intent, which become abstract worlds and fictional places. I have found a developing symbiosis between my photography and my painting.
